A philosophy for everyday leadership

Leave it
better.

What if the most meaningful kind of leadership begins with one simple decision: wherever you go, leave something better than you found it?

The moment that started it all

A stranger. An airport sink. A sentence that changed everything.

I was washing my hands in an airport restroom when I noticed a man in a very nice suit beside me. After drying his hands, he took more paper towels and carefully began wiping down the sink.

It looked so unexpected that I joked, “Have you been working here long?” He smiled and offered a simple reply: “You know, it’s not a bad idea to leave things a little better than you find them.”

He walked out. I wiped down my first public sink—and a philosophy of personal responsibility was born.

The S.I.N.K. philosophy

Four movements. One way of life.

Leaving it better is not a grand gesture. It is a repeatable way of seeing a need, owning your part, and taking the next right action.

S

Seek the need

Notice what could be better. Pay attention to the person, place, or moment in front of you.

I

Invest yourself

Bring what you have—your attention, energy, skill, kindness, or time.

N

Nullify the need

Take responsibility and act. Do what you can to genuinely improve the situation.

K

Keep it going

Make goodness contagious. Invite others to carry the practice forward.

Make it real today

Three directions. Eighteen ways to begin.

Choose a direction below. You do not have to change everything today—just leave one thing better.

Begin within

Leave self better today.

You cannot give the world what you are unwilling to cultivate in yourself. Choose one small investment in the person you are becoming.

  1. 01

Begin the day with ten quiet minutes to reflect, pray, or set your intention.

  2. 02

Move your body in a way that leaves you stronger and more energized.

  3. 03

Read or listen to something that enlarges your thinking.

  4. 04

Finish one task you have been avoiding.

  5. 05

Replace one harsh thought about yourself with something true and constructive.

  6. 06

End the day by naming one lesson learned and one thing you are grateful for.

Everything may not be within your control.

But something is always within your reach.
